FOUNDER’S NOTE
I am an Afro-Caribbean/mixed heritage embodiment and conscious dance facilitator, politicized healer and community organizer, based in California. I have been teaching since 1992 and I am the founder of Dance Sanctuary™, a highly attended dance community and integrated healing space in the Bay Area.
Blending Soul Motion®, somatic and social justice perspectives, I offer classes and workshops in the USA and abroad. My mission is to advance personal & collective transformation, healing and liberation to all race, gender, age and sexual orientation.
For decades, I have danced, taught and trained in mostly white spaces being the only woman of color and experienced unconscious and structural bias. While this practice has brought me joy, cracked my heart wide open to love and connection, it has also illuminated the denial of racial prejudices and injustices in the conscious dance world.
This experience combined with my skills and knowledge inspired me to create Movement Liberation: a project for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) curating embodied and somatic classes, workshops and retreats centering bodies of cultures and uplifting educators of color.
Movement Liberation’s mission is to bring inclusive, accessible movement and mindfulness education, and guide the way to a next step into a new global and racial equity paradigm, not just on the dance floor but in every aspect of operations and partnerships, including fundraising.
This movement centers embodiment and presence as ways to reawaken ourselves into the right relationship we are meant to have to our body, each other, and the planet.
This project is a true north star.
With love,
Valerie
